Social
Studies Lesson
for Potato Day
Objective:
The students will identify the
components needed for selling goods.
|
Materials
|
Procedure
-
Put
the students in small groups of 4 or 5. For
younger students, work as a whole class to complete
the lesson.
-
Challenge
the students to create a "Potato
Stand". The purpose of the stand is selling
potatoes. What will the students need to set up
this business? Pass out the Potato
Stand Worksheet so the students may brainstorm and
list their ideas.
-
Give
the students access to the art supplies for creating
any of the items they have identified. For
example, a sign advertising their business, the
potatoes for selling (could be cut from tan paper),
the money for buying the potatoes from the farm, a
container to serve as a cash register, etc.
-
When
the students have completed their "Potato
Stands", have them share their creations with the
rest of the class.
-
Once
all the groups have shared their work, discuss what
they had in common, as well as any differences.

Other
Lesson Ideas
-
Most
of America's potatoes are grown in Idaho. Locate
Idaho on a map. What are the states that surround
Idaho? How would the students get to Idaho from
their home?
-
Locate
potato recipes from around the world. For
example, German Potato Pancakes. Locate Germany on
a map or globe.
-
Have
a lesson on how potatoes get to market. Use the
following web site for assistance, Dole
5 a Day (Click on the information regarding the
potato in the "Reference Center".)
