Objective:
The students will identify the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, as well as the equator.

Materials

• World maps or globes

• Dividing the Earth Worksheet

• A link to the following site, Penguins Around The World.  

Procedure

1. Have a discussion about where penguins live on the earth.  Share the aforementioned web site.  Included is a map which gives information on penguin species and on which continents they live.

2. Discuss with the students how penguins only live in the Southern Hemisphere.  Continue with the discussion by defining the equator, the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.  Use the maps and/or globe as a visual aid.

3. Pass out the Dividing the Earth Worksheet and have the students follow the directions.
