Objective:
The students will experiment with creating shades of gray.

Materials

• Black and white paint

• Paper and paintbrushes

• Pictures or photographs of penguins

Procedure

1. While showing the pictures or photographs, discuss the coloring of penguins and how they all are primarily black and white.

2. Give each student some black paint and some white paint.  Have them experiment mixing black and white to create various shades of gray.  Ask questions about making the shades lighter and darker.

3. Have the students paint a scene which includes a black and white penguin and the various shades they have created.

Other Lesson Ideas

1. In conjunction with the Language Arts Lesson, have the students decorate the invitation they wrote.
