Train Day

Movement Lesson
for Train Day

Objective:
The students will create a human train.

Materials

  • A wide open space allowing for movement

Procedure

  1. Have the students get in a line.  They should place their hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them.

  2. Discuss that the speed of their train will be set by the clapping of the teacher's hands.  The students should shuffle their feet in the rhythm of the teacher's clapped hands.

  3. The teacher should begin with a slow, steady clap and slowly increase the speed, just as a starting train would move.

  4. The students will need to work together to keep in step with the rhythm set by the teacher.

Other Lesson Ideas

  1. Sing any number of train songs, such as "I've Been Working on the Railroad."  Use the following link for ideas - PreschoolRainbow.

  2. Have the students participate in dramatic play.  Line up chairs to a form a train.  Have the students utilize play "tickets" for boarding the train.  Once everyone is "aboard", they may sing train songs.
