Objective:
The students will define island, identify New Zealand on a world map, and list cultural facts about New Zealand.

Materials

• A world map or a link to the following site: New Zealand's Location.

• A nonfiction book about New Zealand or a link to the following site: Scholastic-Portrait of New Zealand.

• New Zealand Worksheet

Procedure

1. Discuss how New Zealand has more sheep than anywhere else in the world.  Identify New Zealand on the world map.

2. Share information from the Scholastic-Portrait of New Zealand web site or book about New Zealand.  Be sure to cover information outlined on the New Zealand Worksheet.

3. Pass out the New Zealand Worksheet.  Have the students complete the sheet individually or as a class.

Other Lesson Ideas

1. Have a lesson on the life of a sheep farmer.  Use the book Hooray for Sheep Farming by Bobbie Kalman.
